I cook. I’ve been cooking my whole life as a means of necessity, as a form of self therapy, and as a hobby and now as a professional chef, writer, and recipe developer. I’ve been in the food industry since college (over eleven years! Thank you, USC), but my passion started and blossomed with my Grandma and our family in her kitchen, with the recipes passed down from her mother, and from the women, friends and associates from various backgrounds throughout different stages in my life.
I was born and raised in North Charleston, SC. My cooking is heavily influenced by my Gullah Geechee and Delta heritage and culture. Our is not your typical Southern food. It's the food of the West African slaves brought to build this country. It is the food of the Indigenous people who were here before us all. And it is the food of all of the colonizers and founders and all the immigrants who have left and continue to leave their marks here. It is soul food in its own right, but more importantly, our food is American food at its deep, painful, and beautiful core.
I hope to honor the legacies of the various ethnic backgrounds who make up who I am. While I can cook just about anything, I focus primarily on southern cuisine and I'm actively focused on learning more on the foods of the Gullah Geechee, Native tribes of the south, and aspects of Latin cuisine.
Here you’ll find recipes, pictures of the things I eat wherever I may be, stories, advice, and more. I now also feature all of my writing and press, recipes, photos, other services I provide as well.
Recently, I was awarded an opportunity to intern with America's Test Kitchen (postponed until further notice) and I also was awarded the 2020 Les Dames Escoffier International Legacy Culinary Award. I've been featured in many publications and podcasts, and I have written for the Post and Courier, Eater National, Food and Wine magazine, and Plate Magazine. I am a Certified Food Safety Manager through the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals as well as ServSafe certified. I am also a member of the Southern Foodways Alliance.
That’s all for now I suppose. Feel free to reach out to me on the contact page or on my social media pages!
